DIY Buffalo Check Wall

An accent wall is a great way to bring some personality and inject a bit of life into a room. Make it a patterned accent wall, and it also becomes the focal point of the room, which we felt our dining room really needed. Buffalo check is one of my favourite patterns, so deciding to paint that on the wall was a no brainer, except that it sounds like a lot of work, right? Not so much! Let me show you what you need to make paint this pattern on a wall.

Materials:

  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Painer’s tape
  • Paint rollers
  • Dropcloth
  • Ladder/step stool
  • Paint

You’ll need a total of four colours: a base colour (usually white) and 3 shades of any other colour you choose. The colours I chose were Benjamin Moore’s Forest Floor, Raintree Green, October Mist, and White Dove as the base.

Step 1:

Paint your wall in the base colour (white).

Step 2:

Measure the wall and do some math according to the size you’d like your pattern to make sure it starts and ends with a full square. I’d suggest between 6-10” squares, so for a 10’ wall, you can have ten 10” squares.

Measure for squares to fit horizontally on the wall – it won’t matter if the pattern cuts off at the bottom of the wall because it won’t be as visible. Mark the wall and draw your grid using a level to make sure all lines are straight.

Step 3:

Tape  the top and bottom of every other horizontal line and paint with your lightest paint colour.

Step 4:

Remove tape from previous step. Tape the left and right outer edges of every other vertical line and paint with the middle colour shade.

Step 5:

Remove tape from previous step. Tape around the squares where the two colours intersect and paint in the darkest shade.

Remove all of the tape and you’re done! I love the impact that a wall like this makes in a room, and you can try it with the traditional black, grey and white or attempt it in a colour that fits with your own home decor!
