In the heart of the home, where form and function meet two under two.
It’s been well over six months in the making, but we’ve finally finished renovating our kitchen. If you’ve ever lived through a kitchen reno with kids (in my case, two under two), then you understand my exasperation. Imagine having no sink for two months, eating out of a tiny bar fridge and living with cardboard and plywood countertops all the while.
It was an interesting time to say the least, but thankfully it’s all a distant memory. Now that we finally have a functioning, finished kitchen, we can laugh about washing the dishes in the powder room sink… for the most part!
As the central hub of our home, we were very thoughtful when it came to the design and layout of our kitchen-to-be. A must-have of ours was a large island that housed the dishwasher and microwave. We also wanted the space to feel grand, airy and open, so to balance out the massive island, we opted to forgo upper cabinets. Instead, we installed floating wood shelves on either side of the stainless steel range hood.
Once all of the big decisions were made on colour, layout, and materials, it was time to pull the trigger on appliances. Because we see this house as our forever home, we knew that we’d have to live with and love our decisions for a very long time—because kitchen renovations don’t exactly happen often!
With a growing family, the Frigidaire Gallery Stainless Steel French Door Refrigerator was a no-brainer, but it also made for some tricky planning due to its sheer size (not only is it 36” wide, but we opted for regular depth). To give it a more built-in look, we housed the fridge between panels that matched the cabinets and we purposely installed the cabinet above it flush with the fridge front. Flanked with two upper cabinets on either side, we not only achieved a custom look using pre-fab, but it made the fridge a feature rather than an eyesore. And we not only have tons of storage surrounding it, but inside the fridge, there’s tons of room for all the baby food, milk, and a few things for my husband and I, too! As a family who can never have enough H2O, having the water dispenser on the outside of the fridge was a must—and the controls can all be locked so that when the boys can reach it, I don’t have to worry about it!
When it came to the dishwasher, we installed the Frigidaire Gallery Stainless Steel Dishwasher in the island, directly opposite the sink. This may seem like odd placement, but with our cutlery and plate drawers in the island next to it, putting away dishes is a breeze. Plus, here it’s tucked out of view, so you barely see it—or hear it for that matter! Before, we could hear our dishwasher all the way in our bedroom and this beauty is so whisper-quiet, the only downside is that I practically forget about the dozens of dishes that need to be put away when it’s done!
When choosing the range, I had only three requirements: that it have a glass top, that it sit flush with the countertop, and that it had front-controls to keep the focus on the bold backsplash. Our Frigidaire Gallery Stainless Steel Slide-In Induction Range fit the bill for form and function, making mealtimes quick, safe and easy. And it’s a slide-in, which means no more food falling between the range and cabinets. Hallelujah!
Having a kitchen that really works for us as a family is so important to me. So while it may have taken several months of planning—and even more time executing—this transformation has been worth every second of the wait. And now that it’s done, I’m having fun adding personal touches such as a self-watering herb garden and decorating with all of my favorite tchotchkes.
