Creating a space for quality family time

For a lot of people the living room is the heart of the home. It’s the communal space where each family member has a spot on the sofa, where books lay open and dog eared, where board games are spread, and where memories are made. For the Simms family, the recipients of Leon’s Hello Holiday surprise makeover space, they can completely relate. They have consciously created a television-free environment in their living spaces so they can focus on memory making and good old fashioned down time.

From the moment we first met Glen, Dorothy and their two energetic and sweet daughters, we knew they were indeed the rightful recipients of the makeover of their dreams. They are the kind of people that have a deep-rooted love for the simple things, and count quality family time as the best gift of all.

In order to give this deserving family a room that’s able to work and grow with them, we designed a space which included multifunctional furniture pieces that would stand the test of time. To create a blank canvas for all of their new Leon’s items, we got to work creating a custom built-in with Metrie products for Glen’s vast book collection. As a history and English teacher who needs his resource collection within arm’s reach, we knew we needed to upgrade his beloved books into a custom unit. Replacing the family’s free-standing book shelves from the one main wall in their home gave us the opportunity to use the entire length of the wall for furniture placement. The new bare wall allowed us to visually elongate the space by creating a feature wall with Metrie trim and we created depth by painting the space a stunning rich grey called Amethyst by Benjamin Moore. While Art, my husband and renovation partner, was busy with the hardscape in the space, I busied myself by finding the perfect Leon’s pieces that allowed us to swap the space’s layout.

The Simms value function and comfort in their design, and really wanted a sofa that had clean lines for longevity. The Fava sofa with its large square arm rests and gracious comfy cushions was the perfect option for snuggling up on with a good book. To ensure game nights and easy puzzle constructing, we paired their sofa with the Wellington coffee table and side tables. Its simple lift top option will also allow this piece to easily transform into an elevated table for their holiday entertaining needs. Now that the Simms have an updated and made-over space, they are sure to be hosting some holiday happenings so extra seating in the form of a pair of classic slipper chairs was a must. The Upton chairs can be easily moved around the space for extra guests and now the Simm girls can each claim their own on Christmas morning.

Now that their dining and living rooms boast beautiful new furniture, It won’t be long until this family entertains at their extendable Charles table. To accommodate as many guests as possible, I paired the table with the Charles bench which will allows even more friends and family to squeeze around the table for a festive feast. The combination of chairs and a bench lends itself to a laid back way of living, which is perfect for a table that will no doubt double as an art space and, later on, a homework space for the girls.

In a home where family togetherness is at its centre, this combination space will undoubtedly be the background for holiday gift giving, wrapping paper explosions, excited giggles, warm embraces and all of the fond childhood memories the girls will hold with them forever. Which of course, is the greatest gift of all.
