When it comes to cozying up your home for the holidays, there is one particular area of the home that brings that feeling of warmth without doing much… the fireplace. In fact during the winter this spot happens to be the highlight of our home and the place we like to dress up a little extra. Whether it be a real fireplace or a faux fireplace, it’s the perfect place to add a few of your favourite items that your guests are bound to notice!

Last fall I was on the hunt to add a simple mantel to our living room because I knew I wanted an extra area to dress up for the seasons. My parents stumbled across the perfect little wooden mantel in need of some sprucing up. I was so excited to get my hands on it, not knowing what I was going to do with it, or all the endless decorating possibilities I am bound to share with you! A few coats of paint later, I had a mantel to call my own and to start customizing it around to our home…

Here’s the before.
And here’s the after of Christmas 2015 (click here to see our home tour in 2015)!

As you can see from the pictures above, a lot has changed since then. The faux mantel is still is the same spot, we just personalized the walls with dark shiplap, which MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE!! Honestly guys, our home is so builder basic, like 1997 basic and I desperately was looking for a way to give our home some charm. Now, this wall makes a statement with its moody and bold colour which really makes the faux fireplace pop! If you’re looking for a few new ways to spruce up your fireplace (or faux fireplace) here are a few simple tips I have found to help me with the process!

5 Tips to Personalize Your Mantel for the Holidays

  1. Colour and Texture.

Something as simple as changing the colour of the wall or adding texture aka the shiplap, can really bring so much character to a space and it helps to highlight the mantel and all things surrounding!

  2. Add greeery/ natural elements.

During the Holidays, it’s always a great idea to bring a little bit of the outdoors into your home. By adding simple branches of greenery to your mantel or tree stumps to the faux fireplace, they will add natural colour to your home. Tip* mist greenery with water daily to help the cuttings last.

  3. Make a statement.

The mantel is an area of your home that is bound to draw attention. By hanging a mirror or layering in holiday art, it can really define your space, giving off warm and welcoming vibes which represent your home. To go a step further, simply hang a branch over the mantel and add your favourite polaroids, also an excuse to display your Christmas cards. Click here to find out how.

  4. Add your favourite candle/ light source.

Clustering candles on the mantel helps create a heat source for us during the winter months and the glow is super cozy and festive! I added my favourite scented candle along with an old lantern that belongs to my parents to bring it some sparkle when lit.5. Simplify. Whether it be a DIY garland or an old trinket passed down from your parents or grandparents, the mantel is a great place to display your favourite holiday decorations. I have always found that grouping a few favourite items together (like Christmas art, greenery and a few neutral garlands with texture), really pull your mantel together without losing the focal point of the display. Tip* Use a pushpin on each side of your mantel to secure garlands in place 😉

  5. Have fun with it!

Don’t be afraid to rearrange your mantel, replace garlands or photos as the season carries on. The best part about a mantel is that it simply looks amazing with very few items, but it also looks amazing layered with garlands or seasonal collections.
